Motorists heading to Harry Reid International Airport encountered extensive delays Thursday morning due to a fatal three-car collision. According to Las Vegas TV station KLAS, southbound lanes on Paradise Road prior to the entrance of the Airport Connector were closed, as well as multiple northbound lanes. Northbound traffic was being diverted to Russell Road following the tunnel. The airport tweeted that drivers should anticipate traffic delays for multiple hours and use alternate routes with sufficient time if traveling to the airport.
The crash took place at around 5:45 a.m. and included one vehicle that had overturned, resulting in one fatality. Two other individuals were transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center for treatment. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers were on the scene investigating the incident.
The incident was expected to cause traffic congestion on nearby roads and highways. People flying in and out of the airport, including gamblers, tourists, and convention attendees, may be affected when driving or getting rides between the airport and nearby hotels and casinos.
This follows a brief technical issue on Tuesday causing several delayed and canceled flights at the airport, according to FlightAware. At least 202 Southwest flights were delayed and three were canceled.
