Outcry Over A’s Relocation to Las Vegas: High-Profile Criticism Abounds

The Oakland Athletics and Las Vegas seem pleased with the decision to move the team to the gambling city, however, not everyone is happy about it. Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis, who made the same move for his own team in 2020, is not pleased with the A’s new location near Allegiant Stadium. Davis expressed his frustration with the A’s former Oakland neighbors, saying he won’t forget what they did to the Raiders in Oakland. He claimed that the A’s had a stranglehold on Oakland Coliseum for years, and when Davis sought to make improvements to the structure, the A’s lease with the city prevented them from doing so. This was the catalyst for Davis to pursue relocating his team, and he believes the A’s slogan of ‘Rooted in Oakland’ is a slap in the face to the Raiders.

In search of a better home than the 57-year-old RingCentral Coliseum, the A’s decided to build a stadium in partnership with Red Rock Resorts in Las Vegas, with a retractable roof in 49 acres near the Strip. This project will cost $1.5 billion and seat 30,000 fans. Davis expressed his disdain for the A’s leaving Oakland without anything, as he felt the stadium site was a good one.

Baseball superstar Reggie Jackson, known as “Mr. Oakland” before his nickname “Mr. October,” is also unhappy with the move. Jackson attempted to buy the A’s himself in 2005, but was outbid by John Fisher and Lew Wolff. He accused former MLB commissioner Allan “Bud” Selig of blocking the bid. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao also criticised the deal, accusing the A’s of conducting negotiations with their hometown city in bad faith.
