San Antonio Spurs Managing Partner and Chairman Peter J. Holt has recently expressed his endorsement of two newly presented sports betting bills. The owner of the five-time NBA champions released a statement via the Texas Sports Betting Alliance, noting that the legislation would provide residents of the state with the opportunity to utilize mobile sports betting responsibly.
Holt joins fellow owners of Texas’s four major sports league teams, Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks and Tilman Fertitta of the Houston Rockets, in supporting the regulated sports wagering in the second-largest state. His statement is especially significant, as the Holt family also owns other Texas-based teams, such as the San Antonio Rampage (AHL), San Antonio FC (USL Championship), and the Austin Spurs (NBA G League).
Recent research conducted by the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs found that 69% of the voters surveyed are in favor of the legalisation of online and retail sports betting in the state. The support for sports betting is strong among various demographic groups, including men and women, all generations, and Black, Latino and white voters.
The data also revealed that there is a strong bipartisan backing for the issue, with 74% of Democrats and 66% of Republicans supporting the legalisation of sports wagering in Texas. Additionally, 62% of those who identified as Christian also voiced their approval.
It appears that the bills have broad public support, and Holt’s endorsement adds to the momentum of the Texas sports betting movement.
